Happy August, y’all! The challenge is in full swing, and I know y’all are always looking for recs, so I’m going to share some horror movies I watched in July! The last month was full of a variety of sub-genres as well as a fair amount of rewatches. Hopefully, you’ll give one or more of these a shot!
July 2026 Recs
- No Rest for the Wicked (2026)- This is the only film on the list that isn’t readily available, as it’s currently on its festival run. That said, it’s a beautiful adaptation of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs’ Manor. It has a beautiful setting and incredible performances. I can’t speak highly enough of this one! - CAMP (2025)- CAMP is the sophomore feature from Avalon Fast. The film feels like a cross between Girl, Interrupted and The Craft, leaning a bit more towards Girl, Interrupted. I’ve been interested in Fast’s work since I saw their first film, Honeycomb. I think they have a really great filmmaking style and are worth keeping an eye on. - Tokyo Gore Police (2008)- This film won’t be for everyone. Heed that warning! It’s out there, gory, and frankly, at times, pretty gross. It definitely earns its sub-genre, splatterpunk. You know what, though, it’s also a whole lot of fun, especially if you watch it with a group!
- The Devil’s Mouth (2026)- For the sake of transparency, I should admit that generally I’m a sucker for a cheesy shark movie. This isn’t the case with The Devil’s Mouth. Sure, it has some silliness and asks you to suspend disbelief. However, it was actually filmed on location in Thailand, and that adds a ton to the production value. They also travel by map at times, which feels a bit like playing a video game. Overall, when it comes to shark horror, you could do a lot worse!
- Alligator (1980)- I said above that I am a sucker for cheesy shark movies; truth be told, alligators and crocodiles are also among my favorites. Alligator has really fun practical effects and is better than it has any right to be! Its sequel drops off a bit, but it’s also a good time! If you’re looking for creature features that aren’t so bad they’re good but are actually good, I recommend this one!
That wraps up my July 2026 recs! For the next 3 months, I will be doing weekly recaps of my favorite watches during the 100 Horror Movies in 92 Days challenge, so I won’t be doing a monthly recap for those months.
