Can you believe August is coming to a close already?! We’re already about a third of the way through the 100 Horror Movies In 92 Days Challenge, and another month closer to Halloween! If you’re already struggling to find something to watch for the challenge, here are some gastro horror titles that should fit the bill!
September 1st
- The Amityville Harvest– While staying at an aging manor to research its liquor-smuggling history, Christina and her documentary video team interview their spooky host, Vincent—but no one can capture his image or voice on video. After shocking dreams and bloody encounters, the crew members fall under Victor’s hypnotic spell. (Peacock) Editor’s note: This may only be loosely gastro horror, but given the premise, I’ve included it.
- Devoured– Malevolent forces within the walls of an old restaurant torment a cleaning woman who is trying to earn enough money to pay for her son’s operation. (Shudder)
- Jawbreaker– When an exclusive clique of teenage socialites accidentally murders their best friend on the morning of her birthday, the three girls responsible conspire to hide the truth. (Shudder) Editor’s note: This is not really horror, but death by food is a very gastro way to go, so I’m including it.
- Leatherface– A young nurse is kidnapped by a group of violent teens who escape from a mental hospital and take her on the road trip from hell. Pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge, one of the teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind, moulding him into a monster named Leatherface. (Peacock) Editor’s Note: Technically, there is no gastro horror in this entry of the franchise, but since the franchise mostly features cannibalism, I’ve included it.
- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street– The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London, which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical. (Paramount+)
September 5th
- Skinned Deep– An ordinary family goes on a trip by car, but their car breaks down. The dutiful father of the family immediately sets off to get help and seems to find it with a nice elderly lady. The woman invites the whole family to dinner, but the hospitality soon turns out to be an ambush. (Screambox)
September 10th
- Swallow (2019)– Hunter, a newly pregnant housewife, finds herself increasingly compelled to consume dangerous objects. As her husband and his family tighten their control over her life, she must confront the dark secret behind her new obsession. (Hulu)
September 12th
- Karne: The Taste of Meat– Brian’s mother keeps tormenting him and his brother until one day he unintentionally kill her. He cuts her up and feeds the pieces to his little brother. Now, as an adult, he keeps up his bloody habit. (YouTube via Kings of Horror)
September 19th
- Takeout– On a dead-end night shift at a remote fast food diner, three coworkers suspect a customer is a serial killer. After digging for proof, they quickly realize they’re in over their heads. (Tubi) Editor’s Note: There is no Letterboxd listing for this film yet, and nothing on IMDb. This will be updated when I have more information.
September 22nd
- Pabrik Gula aka Sugar Mill– A group of young men and women who work as seasonal workers in a sugar factory face terror from the kingdom of demons where the factory is located. They must find out the cause of the demons’ anger before the terror ends their lives. (Shudder)
