Happy June! Last month was the Murder Mystery MAYhem challenge, so my recommendations for May are going to be a little different. Instead of my usual horror recommendations, I’m going to share some of the murder mysteries I enjoyed last month! I’m a huge fan of murder mysteries and whodunnits, and while my challenge allows for rewatches, I do try to keep them to a minimum! Here are some recommendations that were new-to-me watches from this year’s challenge.
May 2026 Recs
- The Thursday Murder Club (2025)- I love a good cozy mystery! The Thursday Murder Club is based on Richard Osman’s book with the same title. I was hoping to read the book beforehand, but didn’t get around to it. I got really invested in the various characters and found myself sobbing by the end. If you’re into the quintessential cozy mystery tropes, this one is for you!
- The Sheep Detectives (2026)- Do you like books like the Shady Hollow series or Babe? If you do, this might be the mystery for you? Much like The Thursday Murder Club, it’s loaded with all the things fans of cozy mysteries would enjoy! Not to mention, the voice cast is stellar!
- Wake Up Dead Man (2025)- I waited for the challenge to watch the third Benoit Blanc film. I am happy to say it was worth the wait! Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Benoit Blanc is right up there with David Suchet’s take on Hercule Poirot. I hope that Rian Johnson will keep making these films as his schedule permits because I will watch every single one of them!

- Lone Star (1996)- This was a recommendation from a friend, and interestingly enough, it would make a banger of a double feature with Wake Up Dead Man. I don’t want to give too much away, but this one really surprised me!
- Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)- I don’t have a ton of experience with Indian cinema, so I can’t compare this in that way, but I had a really great time with this movie. Sushant Singh Rajput’s performance as the titular detective was really stellar. It’s unfortunate that due to his untimely passing, we aren’t likely to see any follow-ups to this iteration. However, if you watch it and want more, there is always the book series it was based on, as well as Chiriyakhana (1967), and around 20 other films based on the book series. I’m not sure how many have been released and translated, but they do exist!
I know this isn’t what y’all normally see from me, but I hope you find something new to check out! Next month I’ll have plenty of horror recs for you, so stay tuned! Don’t forget, my Discord Server is always open, whether you’re participating in an active challenge or not. Come hang out, watch movies with us, and get even more recommendations from lots of great folks! What did you watch last month that you enjoyed? Let me know in the comments below!
